Time and materials (TM) is a standard phrase in a contract for construction, product development or any other piece of work in which the employer agrees to pay the contractor based upon the time spent by the contractors employees and subcontractors employees to perform the work, and for materials used in the
Unlike fixed-price contracts that nail down every detail, time and materials contracts are more flexible. They acknowledge that projects can evolve. In practice, a time and material contract thrives on constant communication and collaboration. Its an ongoing dialogue between the client and the contractor.
A TM or Time and Material engagement is a pricing model used in professional services, such as consulting or software development. In this model, the customer pays for the actual time that the team spends working on the project, along with the materials or resources utilized by them.
An example of a time and materials contract is a contract that stipulates a $30 hourly rate plus an additional 10% on any items purchased. It also states that buyers will not pay more than $1,000 in materials and in excess of 80 hours of labor.
The key difference between the two lies in the way a contractor factors for profit. In a TM contract, the contractor adds a markup rate to its costs. In a cost-plus contract, the contractor bills for actual costs plus a separate amount for profit, either a fixed fee or a percentage of the projects total cost.
Time and Material is an engagement model in which the client pays only for time and resources spent on the project.
Time and materials contracts specify the scope of a project but are open-ended. They set out prices for materials and hourly rates for labor, and the client is billed at those rates for as many hours and as much material as is required to complete the project.
