Use small, side-to-side movements with your pencil to shade your shape and go back over the areas which you would like to be darker. Vary the length of your pencil strokes so that they dont look too uniform and make sure that your lines are following the same direction to ensure that your shading looks even.
Find three foundation shades that look like a good match and apply them in parallel lines on your jawline, extending the product from your cheek and onto your neck slightly. The perfect foundation shade is the one that blends seamlessly into your skin in both areas. Avoid swatching shades on your arm.
Shading gives depth to a drawing. The effect of light on the object depicted through shading gives the drawing a realistic look. If you dont shade, the drawing looks very flat and 2 dimensional.
Assuming you have a single strong light source at an almost infinite distance (like the sun), look at other elements and see which way the predominant light is falling. You are looking for two angles, first an angle in an imaginary circle around the base of your object and the second an angle downward to the ground.
Look for which planes are getting hit by light and which are turned away from the light. Those are your light and shadow breaks. Refer to my lesson on light logic here. When shading, look at the larger light and shadow shapes first, and draw those in.
Apply light pressure with your pencil to create a base layer of shading. If youre shading with graphite, start with a soft 4B pencil to create a middle shade. Hold the pencil on its side, and move your elbow or shoulder rather than your wrist to lay down the shading in long strokes with a smooth transition.
