At a Glance: The last four digits of a social security number (SSN) are called the Serial Number. These digits are the unique to the person whom the SSN was assigned to. Social Security Numbers are issued by the government and they are used for various purposes.
Now, anyone from anywhere in the country can get one of the more than 400 million available nine-digit combos, giving the format a considerably longer life.
The SSN Numbering Scheme The nine-digit SSN is composed of three parts: The first set of three digits is called the Area Number. The second set of two digits is called the Group Number. The final set of four digits is the Serial Number.
When verifying a persons SSN, remember that: No valid SSN has all zeros in any of the 3 segments. For example, all of the following SSNs are invalid: 000-26-6781.
Since 1973, social security numbers have been issued by our central office. The first three (3) digits of a persons social security number are determined by the ZIP Code of the mailing address shown on the application for a social security number.
The Social Security Administration does not issue SSNs beginning with the number 9. Numbers beginning with a 9 may be a Social Security Administration issued Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). An ITIN is a tax processing number issued by the IRS that has 9 digits beginning with the number 9.
The last four digits of the SSN are the serial number. The serial number represents a straight numerical series of numbers from 00019999 within each group. Serial number 0000 is not assigned.
If you have a Social Security Number, you can find it on your Social Security card. Some other places that you can find your SSN are on tax returns, W-2s and bank statements. You may even find it on previously filed USCIS forms.
