One great thing about shadowing? You can add it to your resume! Its a way to show youre serious about learning. Many people think only medical students do job shadowing.
Shadowing experiences can vary from one job to the next, but typically you follow an employee in the specific role youre studying and observe their daily tasks. Sometimes, you might get the chance to engage in some hands-on training as well.
Although shadowing is arguably the most difficult clinical experience to receive, it is still very beneficial and is worth pursuing!
Clinical experience is distinct from shadowing, primarily because you are performing more hands-on tasks. Only Physician Assistant programs require a specific amount of clinical experience hours for your application.
Some examples of clinical and other exploratory experiences Patient care roles that interface with physicians (including but not limited to CNA, dialysis tech, EKG tech, EMT, medical assistant, patient advocate, phlebotomist, etc.)
How do I find a doctor to shadow? If you have a relationship with your own doctor(s), or know any doctors, start by asking them. You can also ask your teachers, professors, and premed or academic advisors if they know any doctors that other students have shadowed in the past.
Medical job shadowing falls under the term clinical experience as it involves following and observing a physician, nurse, or other healthcare professional while they conduct their daily work activities in a clinical or hospital setting.
Even though it may be very tempting to tell someone else who may know that patient about what you saw, you can not share or talk about this information with anyone (other than the person you are shadowing with at the hospital). dealing with patients information you must keep it confidential. There are no exceptions!
