Why hello! Im Andy and Im here at Shady Grove Station at one end of the DC Metros Red Line. Today, well be riding all the way to Glenmont on a train just like that to look at all the hidden secrets, stories, and facts that you might not know about from some of DCs most famous stations. So join me, ride with me, and lets begin this journey. Welcome to Secrets of the Red Line. We start our journey at Shady Grove, which was, until the opening of the Silver Line Phase II Extension, the furthest station from the Washington Monument at over 17 miles away, and one of the few stations in the system to have fare gates on the platform level. But there are far more interesting stations ahead, and so well hop on the next train going south towards downtown DC and Glenmont. Our next station south is Rockville, the first station on our ride to have a connection to the MARC Brunswick line. Linked to thestation via a shared underground passageway, its in this passageway

In 1933, the Home Owners Loan Corporation (HOLC) was created to make home ownership more widely available to Americans during the Great Depression. HOLC hired local real-estate experts to create residential securities maps to assess risk. Those maps are what are now known as redlining maps.
As redlined areas were often delimited in areas with higher population density and impervious cover, these areas tend have lower tree cover today.
While the most well-known examples involve denial of credit and insurance, also sometimes attributed to redlining in many instances are: denial of healthcare and the development of food deserts in minority neighborhoods.
Redlining, which takes many forms, is most commonly the practice of denying loans in certain neighborhoods because of race or socioeconomic characteristics.
Since 2003, the borders of Louisville are the same as Jefferson County, making Louisville a consolidated city-county.Population by Race. RacePopulationPercentage (of total)White422,88768.35%Black or African American148,60624.02%Two or more races21,5223.48%Asian16,5232.67%3 more rows
Redlining can be defined as a discriminatory practice that consists of the systematic denial of services such as mortgages, insurance loans, and other financial services to residents of certain areas, based on their race or ethnicity.
Redlining made it hard for residents to get loans for homeownership or maintenance, and led to cycles of disinvestment. This history is not behind us: 87% of San Franciscos redlined neighborhoods are low-income neighborhoods undergoing gentrification today.
With fewer shade-providing trees, parks and other green spaces, and a high density of heat-trapping concrete buildings and asphalt roads, these neighborhoods tend to retain more heat. The study found that redlined neighborhoods were 5 degrees F hotter on average than other neighborhoods in the same city.
