Luckily, we have alternatives, especially when it comes to growing shrubs in the shade. There are some spectacular standouts we can enjoy, including azaleas (pictured above), climbing hydrangeas, Euonymus, red and yellow twig dogwoods, elderberries, ninebark, spirea and others.
Here are our favorite perennials that are sun-lovers and prefer either partial or full sun Black Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia) Agastache, Catmint, Coreopsis, Daylily, Dianthus, Echinacea, Heuchera, Hibiscus, Lavender, Peony, Phlox, CdocHuber, Salvia and Sedum.
Shade is hard for hedging. It grows through patch and weakly, at best, and wont give good screening. The plants that do well in our deep shade are holly and yew. They are exceptionally slow growing, but once established they will fill in and do what you need visually.
