What is golden hour? The last hour before sunset and the first hour after sunrise are coveted by professional photographers. Referred to as the golden hour or magic hour, these times provide the perfect light to capture stunning photos.
Morning sunlight is soft and is often the best time to photograph nature, imbuing objects with a soft golden glow. Late afternoon sunlight is a bit stronger, but also casts a wonderful golden glow.
Any professional photographer will agree that the best time to take photos outdoors is during what is known as the golden hour. This is typically the hour just before the sun sets. It is during this time that the lighting is ideal because the sun is typically at its lowest point in the sky.
Golden hour is a thing and the reason its the best time of day to photograph is because the light is less harsh during sunset/sunrise than during the middle of the day. This is because the suns rays have further to travel when they are low on the horizon.
Professional photographers swear by the perfect light of the golden hour, which lasts for about an hour right after sunrise and an hour right before sunset when the sun is low in the sky and offers a soft, diffused light.
Place your subject close to the edge of the shadow. Placing it on the edge of the shadow means that the bright light outside of the shadow area will be more likely to illuminate it without shining directly onto it. This helps to add dimension.
Use your camera to explore many perspectives, like overhead, straight on, close up, and far away. Also, if youre shooting inside, try finding a sun patch, dark corner, or spot by the window, and see what light shows your subject best and creates the feeling you want to convey in your image.
Hands down, one hour before sunset is ideal. I would even stretch it to 45 minutes before sunset, too. Thing is, after the sun sets, theres still light in the sky and its actually quite nice! You may have heard photographers reference golden hour before.
