I prefer to use a Verithin colored pencil. It has a very dry application of color that doesnt have a lot of wax and wont build up. It allows the gray tones of the graphite to show through completely. Other brands of colored pencils can be used as well, but you must be very careful to apply them lightly and evenly.
Start by using the lightest gray or white along the area nearest to the light. You can use various shades of pencil or coloring tools to create this effect. Blend to add volume to objects. If the layers of grey are blended together where each shade meets, it can further simulate the appearance of volume and solidity.
A soft vellum surface. The random texture is ideal for sublte and even shading. Strathmore 500 Series Plate Drawing or Plate Bristol papers are our very smoothest. The smoother the paper, the more difficult it can be to produce an even shade.
