Raising your window shade during takeoff and landing makes it easier for the flight attendants to assess any exterior hazards, like fire or debris, that might interfere with an emergency evacuation, pilot Patrick Smith of AskThePilot.com tells Travel + Leisure.
The first reason is your safety. If anything happens during a take-off or landing, your eyes will already be used to the day or night light outside, thus you will be able to react more quickly. Another reason for keeping the blinds open is visibility of aircraft outside.
From a safety standpoint, open shades help improve situational awareness, says a rep from the Flight Safety Foundation. For example, during an emergency evacuation, flight attendants or passengers need to be able to see outside to determine whether its safe to open and use an emergency exit.
Takeoff and landing are the two most dangerous times in any flight, and the times when an emergency evacuation is most likely to be needed. Open window covers make it easier for first responders to tell from the outside whether anyone is still in the plane, whether there are smoke and fire inside the plane, etc.
In general, airplane etiquette dictates that the person in the window seat decides the blinds position. Whoever is sitting next to [the window] gets to control it, flight attendant Kelly Kincaid told travel blog The Points Guy while discussing shade rights.
The person in the window seat usually has control over whether the window shade is open or closed. However courtesy plays a role too. On overnight flights across time zones window shades should be closed whenever possible - many passengers are trying to sleep, but it may be light out
