A durable power of attorney involves two parties: a principal and an agent. The principal designates the agent to manage their financial matters, usually in writing. While a spouse is commonly selected as an agent, the principal can choose anyone they trust, with attorneys often recommending beneficiaries of the will. The principal may designate more than one agent to make decisions collaboratively or can appoint an alternative agent if the original cannot act. Unlike a general power of attorney, which ceases upon the principal's incapacitation, a durable power of attorney remains effective until the principal's death or their decision to revoke it.
