Our brain filters and corrects colours differently at daylight but just slightly. So if your brain filters blue out, we see a gold and white dress. Those who see blue and black (the dress is blue and black) filter these brown yellow colours (what sometimes looks like gold).
As a result, we make assumptions about how the dress was illuminated, which affects the colors we see. Shadows are blue, so we mentally subtract the blue light in order to view the image, which then appears in bright colorsgold and white, Wallisch continues.
People who saw the dress as a white-gold color probably assumed it was lit by daylight, so their brains ignored shorter, bluer wavelengths. Those who saw it as a blue-black shade assumed a warm, artificial light, so their brains ignored longer, redder wavelengths.
Those who thought that the dress, worn by the mother of a bride at a wedding in Scotland, was photographed in a shadow likely saw the garment as gold and white; by contrast, those who thought it was illuminated by artificial light were more likely to see it as black and blue.
Another study in the Journal of Vision, by Pascal Wallisch, found that people who were early risers were more likely to think the dress was lit by natural light, perceiving it as white and gold, and that night owls saw the dress as blue and black.
Remember, the dress is actually blue and black, though most people saw it as white and gold, at least at first.
The dress is a viral meme that launched to stardom on 26th February 2015, when the world disagreed over whether the item of clothing below was black and blue or white and gold.
