- Welcome back! Its Tuesday, lets do this. (rock music) Alright, todays topic is dynamic range, shooting in LOG, and picture profiles. Whats the best- (piano music) for you, and whats going to give you the best picture and the best settings based on the camera that you have? So lets throw two minutes on the clock, lets go. This is the best for portraits, so on and so forth. Those picture profiles have different settings within them that capture images differently. Now, whats really popular, Im sure youve heard of it, is shooting your footage in a flat profile, something called LOG. I shoot Canon, so they call it C-Log. What does that mean? Well, at first sight, it looks like this, and it doesnt look the best. You might say, Ugh, theres no contrast, no saturation, its like gray, and

(applauding) (upbeat music) Okay, camera nerds, let's get nerdy and talk about log. Log is a camera profile setting that allows you to shoot a super flat image. What I mean is that you can capture footage that has more dynamic range, giving you extra details in the shadows and highlights.
Color grading log footage Log is short for 'logarithmic', and when shooting in log you use a logarithmic rather than a linear tone curve. Not all cameras offer log modes – this is associated with higher end models and is a key selling point.
Shooting in log allows your camera's sensor to capture and output more detail. Log delivers a broader dynamic range without the extreme memory and post-production demands of shooting in full RAW.

And you'll have a little bit longer in post shooting and log will give you the freedom to fix any mistakes. And to add a look to your footage.
First and foremost is the fact that shooting in log isn't always necessary. Because log is primarily designed to maximize dynamic range, it makes sense to shoot log in tricky lighting conditions where you expect there to be both extremely bright and dark parts in the image.
To put it simply, Logarithmic footage, generally known as Log, is flat footage that contains more details of the scene it's baking into the image. This kind of footage is not intended to be used without editing so it needs further alterations to be used as the final footage.

Log is a VERY flat picture profile which retains a hell of a lot of contrast information in the image. Log is so flat it can become difficult to properly judge a shot because you are looking at something which looks so milky and lacking in colour. In this instance, an external monitor will help.
A log profile, or logarithmic profile, is a shooting profile, or gamma curve, found on some digital video cameras that gives a wide dynamic and tonal range, allowing more latitude to apply colour and style choices.
