Today, weamp;#39;re going to be talking about the time context and historical context of the book called, Of Mice and Men. So for the historical context, we have the fact that it happens between 1929 and 1939. This is where the story happened and this is also during the Great Depression. Light represents good and darkness, evil. Light is truth, purity, and righteousness, while darkness represents lies, evil, and nefarious activity. This metaphor originated at creation. Genesis 1:3-4 says, Then God said, Let there be light, and there was light.
Of Mice and Men is set in California during the 1930s. The story centers around two migrant workers, George Milton and Lennie Smalls, during the Great Depression.
The symbolic representation of light embodies the hopes and the American Dream, whereas the dark epitomizes the harsh realities and truths of their lives. Steinbeck uses light and dark to foreshadow the upcoming events in the forlorn lives of the migrant workers.
The motif of light and darkness emphasizes Janes social isolation, helplessness, and lack of freedom.
In chapter 6, Lennie has killed Curleys wife and run away. The other men intend to torture him before they kill him, so George takes Curleys gun and heads off to find him. Fortunately, he finds Lennie before the rest of the men and has a few moments with him to bring him joy before he kills him out of mercy.
In the final section of the novel, just before George kills Lennie, Steinbeck describes how the light climbed out of the valley. (Section 6). Light could represent hope and happiness, so the light disappearing at this point could be Steinbecks way of telling us that hope is now lost.
LIGHT AND DARKNESS are basic natural phenomena as well as symbolic or metaphorical meanings that are often equated with the pairs of Being and Non-Being, primordial chaos and world order.
Answer and Explanation: George comes to Lennie and shoots him in the back of the head. Before he shoots him, however, he has Lennie look across the river and imagine the farm they talked about getting. George recites the dream for Lennie before he takes the shot.
