ACL healing process. The graft healing process after ACL reconstruction involves three phases: early healing phase, proliferative phase and ligamentization phase.
Graph showing how the strength of the ACL graft initially drops and then gradually returns to normal as the graft grows a new blood supply and slowly remodels. The graft is at its weakest at 3 to 6 months just when the patient is beginning to regain confidence.
A black and blue discoloration around the knee, due to bleeding from inside the knee joint. A feeling that your injured knee will buckle, give out or give way if you try to stand.
Recovering from ACL reconstruction It usually takes about six months to a year to make a full recovery from ACL reconstruction.
Youll need to use crutches at first, limiting your weight-bearing and walking. Within a week of surgery, youll start physical therapy. Youll gradually be able to walk, and by 3 months, you may jog. Bracing and physical therapy is less invasive, but its not ideal for very active individuals.
Typically, by that 3-month mark youre pretty much back to your normal daily life, says Vignona. However, for athletes and those looking to get back to a sport, recovery can take some time. For this group, 8 months to a year after surgery is the average timeline for getting back to their previous athletic level.
That process can take nine or 10 months. Although some exceptional athletes can return to sports in six months, a more realistic scenario after an ACL tear is a recovery time of at least eight to nine months.
How long does it take to recover from a torn ACL? It usually takes six to nine months to recover from a torn ACL. Competitive athletes may need a little longer than this to heal fully before theyre cleared to return to their sport. Your provider will tell you when you can resume physical activities.
