Traditionally, the /etc/passwd file is used to keep track of every registered user that has access to a system. The /etc/passwd file is a colon-separated file that contains the following information: User name. Encrypted password. User ID number (UID)
The /etc/shadow is a text-based password file.
The pwck command verifies the integrity of the users and authentication information. It checks that all entries in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow have the proper format and contain valid data.
1. /etc/passwd: This file stores basic user account information, including the users username, user ID (UID), group ID (GID), home directory, and login shell. 2. /etc/shadow: This file stores the encrypted password hashes for user accounts on the system.
Traditional password files are maintained in /etc/passwd, but the actual hashed passwords are stored in /etc/shadow.
Although covering any kind of security algorithm is tempting, the simple answer to this query is No. You cant decrypt a hash password because its designed as such.
A shadow password file, also known as /etc/shadow, is a system file in Linux that stores encrypted user passwords and is accessible only to the root user, preventing unauthorized users or malicious actors from breaking into the system.
A note about password ageing in the /etc/shadow file The encrypted password hash consists of 13 to 24 characters from the 64 character alphabet a through z, A through Z, 0 through 9, \. and /. Optionally it can start with a $ character.
