The following general steps address how to properly integrate a quotation into an essay. Step 1: Introduce the Author of the Quotation. Step 2: State the Quotation. Step 3: Summarize the Quotation. Step 4: Analyze the Quotation. Step 5: State the Quotations Relevance to Your Argument.
When using a quote at the opening, say the quote first and then the author. When using a quote at the end of a speech, say the author first and then the quote. Keep it short and sweet. Use a quote that gets to the point quickly.
There are two ways to do this: Signal phrase (Citation in prose in the MLA Handbook): Introducing the name of the author or the works title in the text of your sentence. Parenthetical citation: Paraphrasing an idea or using a quotation without the author/title in your sentence text.
Use An Introductory Phrase Naming The Source, Followed By A Comma to Quote A Critic or Researcher. Note that the first letter after the quotation marks should be upper case. ing to MLA guidelines, if you change the case of a letter from the original, you must indicate this with brackets.
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago. If a window of opportunity appears, dont pull down the shade. When I take good care of myself, it lifts my spirits, boosts my confidence, and makes me feel strong.
MLA in-text citation style uses the authors last name and the page number from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken, for example: (Smith 163). If the source does not use page numbers, do not include a number in the parenthetical citation: (Smith).
Quoting Directly Add an in-text citation at the end of the quote with the author name and page number, like this: Heres a direct quote (Smith 8). Heres a direct quote (Trouble 22). Note: The period goes outside the brackets, at the end of your in-text citation.
Quote: Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago. Warren Buffett.
