When you voluntarily take a period of leave without pay, authorized by your employer, it is considered as quitting your job. If the reason for voluntarily taking a period of leave is without just cause, you will not be paid regular benefits for the entire period of the leave.

The family responsibility leave provisions provide employees who have been employed for at least two consecutive weeks with the right to take up to three days of unpaid leave from work each calendar year because of the illness, injury, medical emergency or urgent matter of certain relatives.
You can work for a different employer while you are on leave and this will not end your leave. But working for any employer while you are on leave could affect your Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.
A leave of absence letter should include the reason for the request and the amount of time youll need away from work, with the date youll stop working, and when you will return. It should also contain your contact information and, if possible, a plan to keep your team on track without you.
Theres no time limit for a medical leave. As long as you have a doctor corroborating your need for the medical leave, you are allowed to be off work as long as you need to be. You cannot lose your job, or be considered to be let go or resigned. If a doctor says you cannot work, you can be off as long as you need.
Employees may request leaves of absence if they have exhausted all their paid time off but still need more. They are legally entitled to a leave of absence in some situations, but otherwise granting the leave of absence is at the employers discretion.
