Semantic refers to a way of naming colors based on how they are used as opposed to their hue. For example you could name a color Success or Positive as it refers to the meaning, as opposed to Green or Emerald. For example backgrounds colors , buttons background colors , text colors, icons colors, etc
Shade is a hue or mixture of pure colors to which only black is added. It contains no white or gray. Shade darkens the color, but the hue remains the same. When mixing a shade, begin with the color itself then add black one drop at a time.
There are different approaches to naming colors in a design system. You can name colors using abstract names (e.g. #b9b9b9 - pigeon), actual names (e.g. #b9b9b9 - silver), numbers (e.g. #b9b9b9 - silver-1) or functional names (e.g. #b9b9b9 - silver-base).
Using descriptivebut not overly emotive or specificnaming for colors can be very effective, when used sparingly. For example, Mint (but not Wintry Green) or Coral (but not Tropical Vacation).
By defining a color system you can ensure you have a controlled (and consolidated) palette of acceptable colors, consistent and proper usage, and also improve ease of maintenance. As a simple starting point, take a look at your brands colors. That palette may heavily influence the swatches you use in your system.
When naming your colors, use distinctive and memorable names. For instance, Sapphire and Brick are more specific than Blue and Red. We built Kromatic for that purpose. You can also find free online alternatives if thats your preference.
Colors of the same hue and saturation, but of different lightness, are called tints and shades. Colors of the same hue and lightness, but of different saturation, are called tones.
Here are the steps to create a well-defined color palette for your design system: Understand Brand Identity and Objectives. Identify Core Brand Colors. Select Secondary Colors. Consider Accessibility. Create Color Variations. Define Color Codes. Name Colors. Establish Usage Guidelines.
