Umber is a natural brown earth pigment that contains iron oxide and manganese oxide. In its natural form, it is called raw umber. When calcined, the color becomes warmer and it becomes known as burnt umber. Its name derives from terra dombra, or earth of Umbria, the Italian name of the pigment.

Umber, a dark brown, is part of the prehistoric palette of earth pigments alongside red ochre, yellow ochre, calcite white and carbon black ochres. These pigments were found in a natural state and mixed with rudimentary binders then painted, often in the shadows deep inside caves.
Although Umbria was the first major region where Raw Umber was sourced commercially, this type of iron oxide and manganese clay soil is found in many parts of the world, and the finest grade of Raw Umber is said to originate from Cyprus.
Tonally, raw umber is cool and dark whereas burnt umber, which like burnt sienna is just the raw pigment roasted, is a darker, redder colour, without the coolness or the green hint of the raw equivalent.
What color is Raw Umber? Raw Umber is a natural earthy brown pigment color that was identified as one of the historic colors found on the King House, a Pueblo Revival residence located in Arizona.
Burnt umber is prepared by heating raw umber until it is a reddish-brown color.
