Back in 2015, Apple introduced the 12-inch MacBook. The first model ever to feature an Apple logo that didnt light up. And since then, the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air have also received the same treatment. This caused some controversy, since the glowing Apple logo has been around for over two decades and has become an iconic design element of Apples notebooks. So why was the illuminated Apple logo removed? Well, thats exactly what Ill explain right now. So when the 12-inch MacBook was introduced, it was the thinnest model in Apples history. In fact, at 13.1 millimeters, it was 24% thinner than the MacBook Air. But that dramatic improvement didnt come without compromises. For example, Apple had to create a new super-thin keyboard that featured butterfly mechanisms instead of the traditional scissor design. They claimed the new keyboard was an improvement, but that didnt turn out to be the case. It was extremely faulty and resulted in a class action lawsuit, with Apple eventually

The first Mac laptop with a lit-up Apple logo was the third-generation PowerBook G3 launched in 1999, and the glowing symbol proved a mainstay through consecutive Apple notebooks for the next 16 years.
The backlit Apple logo is no more, starting about 2016 this feature has been removed.
If you are talking about an MacBook Air or Pro, the light is actually the backlight for the keyboard. It glows when the keyboard backlight is on. If you close the lid, shut it down, or put it to sleep the backlight goes off, and so does the logo.
The 20112017 model years of the MacBook Air had a backlight. There used to be a cutout with frost glass that lit up when the laptop was running. The MacBook Pro (model years 20082014) had this feature too. Now with the previous MacBook discontinued, no Mac in the present lineup hosts that feature.
If the screen is on, the apple is lit. The screens backlight is lighting up the Apple logo. Theres no way you can turn it off other than to completely dim the screen to a point its off.
Illumination went away with the release of the 12 Retina MacBook in 2015, apparently as a result of the chassis becoming so thin. Most of the people who read and post on this forum are Apple customers, like yourself, so if you want to request that illuminated logos make a comeback, you might want to contact Apple.
The apple laptop models that have glowing apple logo are the 2011 to 2017 MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro 2008 to 2014 models.
Its been said that the new MacBooks lid is so thin that there isnt as much room to allow a hole for the screen backlight to show through the logo while still providing enough structural support for the screen.
