The two types of shading commonly employed in design patent application drawings are straight-line surface shading and stippling. Individually or in combination, they can effectively represent the character and contour of most surfaces.
Some of the important line types those we can use in drawings for patents are Solid Line, Phantom Line, Projected Line, Hidden Line, and Boundary Line. These lines help the patent examiner to clearly understand the invention and get an idea of how the invention looks like to improve the scope of getting the patent.

There are three types of patents - Utility, Design, and Plant. Utility patents may be granted to anyone who invents or discovers any new and useful process, machine, article of manufacture, or compositions of matters, or any new useful improvement thereof.
They are used when a line is obstructed by another part, device, or embodiment and that line needs to be disclosed for patent filing purposes. This line type will appear as dashed. The dashed line is sometimes confused with the disclaimed lines (Phantom Lines) and projection lines.
Some examples of design patents include ornamental designs on jewelry, automobiles or furniture, as well as packaging, fonts and computer icons (such as emojis). Some famous design patent objects include the original curvy Coca-Cola bottle (1915) and the Statue of Liberty (1879).
