Artists are able to create the illusion of light using different color and tonal values. Value defines how light or dark a given color or hue can be. Values are best understood when visualized as a scale or gradient, from dark to light. The more tonal variants in an image, the lower the contrast.
Light travels in a straight line from its source. When light reaches an opaque (solid) object, the light is prevented from moving through the object, leaving an area of darkness on the other side (a shadow). If an object is transparent, the light can move through it.
Light is a form of energy, and it comes as a wave and particle. All objects are likely to absorb or reflect the colors emitted by the light. It makes the objects appear differently based on the color that they reflect. On the other hand, shadows require an object and light source for its appearance.
Together the light and shadow can convince the viewer that your flat canvas seems real. The simpler you make the shadow, the stronger your painting will appear. The main device available to artists to create form on a canvas is shadow on an object. Without shadows on forms, dimension are more difficult to achieve.
Because shadows reveal much about an object's extension in space, they are often used to heighten the illusion of depth in a painting.
A small spotlight like a cellphone torch forms a more distinct shadow than an overhead room light, but the sharpness of the shadow changes when the torch moves away from the object. The Sun is low on the horizon so the penguin's shadow is long.
It is the dark side on an object not facing the light that reveals the form and mass of the shape. The very darkest point within the Form Shadow is called the Form Shadow Core. It falls under the Shadow Line (or Terminator) on the dark side and is where there is no light hitting the surface.
Light often describes the light source or light reflected within the composition. In realistic compositions, if there is light, there is shadow.
chiaroscuro, (from Italian chiaro, “light,” and scuro, “dark”), technique employed in the visual arts to represent light and shadow as they define three-dimensional objects.
Art can use light to create depth, detail and atmosphere, and to convey emotion or to make a statement. Artists have always used light to emphasize certain aspects of their works of art. How light bathes a basket of fruit, for example, or shines on a pearl earring, can accentuate an art work's attributes.
