You may have heard of HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which covers people and their medical records. However, since HIPAA does not apply to our pets, some states have actually implemented laws that address the same concerns for animals.

To start with, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) that governs privacy when it comes to human medical care does not apply to veterinary patients. In fact, there is no regulation of veterinary records at the federal level at all.
Medical Records Retention Adult patients: 10 years from the date of the last entry in the record. Patients who are children: 10 years after the day on which the patient docHubed or would have docHubed 18 years of age.
You must request the records from your veterinarian - a written request is recommended. Under Business and Professions Code section 4855, the veterinarian is obligated to provide you with a summary of the patient record. The expectation is that the records will be provided within a reasonable amount of time.
How long must a veterinarian retain records? Medical records must be retained for a period of at least seven years after the date of the last entry in the record or until seven years after the member ceases to practise veterinary medicine, whichever occurs first.
