Types of Lamp Shade Fitters Fitters are not interchangeable, so be sure to use a shade with the correct fitter for your lamp. There are the three common fitters: Spider, Clip-On, and Uno. The spider lamp shade is the most common type of fitter for table and floor lamp shades.
The shade should be twice as wide as the lamp base, and one third of the total height of the lamp. So for a 6-inch lamp base, the shade should be at least 12 inches wide. And if the total height of the lamp (including the bulb and harp) is 24 inches, the shade should be 8 inches tall.
Place the lamp on its side in the middle of the bubble wrap, roll it up and secure it with tape. For longer moves, you should add another layer of bubble wrap. Wrap several lengths of tape around the lamp, and fold over the edges of the bubble wrap to secure the bottom of the lamp.
It is best not to pack any other items with your shades. Line a box with crumpled paper. Put a single lampshade in the box. Fill with crumpled paper to keep the shade from shifting. Close the box and secure it with packing tape. Label the box.

Place lamp base in the box upright. Fill in the box around the lamp with packing peanuts, paper or furniture pads to help prevent the lamp from shifting within the box during the transport. Packing paper should be put around the finial (the decorative piece above the light bulb) and harp (the u-shaped shade holder).
How to pack tabletop and floor lamps for moving Gather supplies: box to fit the lamp base, packing paper, paper padding or Bubble Wrap, tape, marker and sheet of foam. Remove parts from the lamp base. Cover the plug. Wrap the base. Wrap the extra pieces in packing paper. Place the lamp and parts in a moving box.
Lamps and Shades Should be Packed Separately Before you pack the lamp base, remove the light bulb and the lamp harp. Wrap each piece individually in news wrap. Place the pieces in a box, packing the empty space well with crushed paper. It is okay to pack more than one lamp per box if space allows.
The bottom edge of the lampshade should fall midway on the neck of the lamp. You dont want the socket or the switch to be visible. When shade shopping, the shade size refers to the width across the bottom of the shade. The best shade will mimic the base of the lamp, and the shape of the table.
