The sun-grown leaves should contain more cells and, thus, more chloroplasts per unit leaf area, because total plasma membrane area of the columnar cells per unit leaf area would be larger than that of the spherical cells in the shade-grown plants16.
Plants grown in the shade have lower maximum photosynthetic rates than those grown in full sun (4), but are often more efficient at low PAR levels. Barden (2) found that for apple, net photosynthesis, dark respiration, and specific leaf weight (SLW) were lower for leaves grown in the shade than those grown in the sun.
Yellow and Orange Pigments are Carotenoids The yellow and orange pigments in fall leaves are known as carotenoids.
Chlorophyll Breaks Down But in the fall, because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature, the leaves stop their food-making process. The chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellow to orange colors become visible and give the leaves part of their fall splendor.
Sun leaves on the average contain more chlorophyll in a leaf area unit; the shade leaf exhibits more chlorophyll on a dry weight basis. Sun leaves show higher rates for dark respiration and a higher light saturation of photosynthetic CO2-fixation.
As night length increases in the autumn, chlorophyll production slows down and then stops and eventually all the chlorophyll is destroyed. The carotenoids and anthocyanin that are present in the leaf are then unmasked and show their colors.
The compensation point is docHubed as light intensity increases. If the light intensity is increased beyond the compensation point, the rate of photosynthesis increases proportionally until the point of light saturation is docHubed, beyond which the rate of photosynthesis is no longer affected by light intensity.
Shade leaves are larger and thinner than normal sun leaves, and often appear a darker green (they contain more chlorophyll). They also have half as many stomata than sun leaves, or even fewer, and so have a lower respiration rate. They can react quickly to brief bursts of sunlight and dappled shade.
Carotenoids are responsible for the red, orange and yellow color of leaves. Carotenoids are present with chlorophyll, but in summer the leaves are green because of high levels of chlorophyll.
The chlorophyll breaks down and the green fades away, letting the yellow/orange carotenoids blaze forth, giving autumn its splash, dash and panache. At the same time, other chemical changes occur, giving rise to more pigments which vary from yellow to red to blue.
