Although theyre generally referred to as vegetables, many nightshades are botanically considered fruits, such as tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Nightshades belong to the Solanacaea family of plants.
Members of the Solanaceae plant family contain alkaloids, including solanine, a natural insecticide. Solanines in belladonna, the so-called deadly nightshade, can cause delirium, hallucinations, and even death.
And everyones favorite cruciferous veggie, broccoli, is also not on the nightshade vegetable list. Colorful fruits and vegetables like blueberries and broccoli are often mistaken for nightshades. But these fruits and veggies are actually full of antioxidants.
Nightshades and your gut However, people who are intolerant to nightshades, meaning they cant digest them properly, may have a negative reaction. Some of these negative side effects include gas, bloating, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea and joint pain due to inflammation.
Nightshades are excellent for you. Besides providing gut-loving fiber, nightshade vegetables (some of which are actually fruits!) also provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients, like carotenoids (in tomatoes), vitamin C (in tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes), and anthocyanin (in eggplant).
Some of these negative side effects include gas, bloating, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea and joint pain due to inflammation. There are many factors to nightshade intolerance because every individuals digestive system is unique. However, research suggests underlying issues may be the real cause of the intolerance.
The Arthritis Foundation says there is no scientific evidence that nightshades cause inflammation or exacerbate arthritis.
Benefits of Nightshades The antioxidant lycopene, found in tomatoes, may decrease the risk of some types of cancer and heart disease. Nightshades also contain vitamins and minerals that contribute to good health, like Vitamin A and Vitamin C.
Some diets claim that nightshades are inflammatory and should be avoided. This idea is rooted in the fact that nightshades are a large family of plants that contain a chemical compound called alkaloids. In extremely high doses, some alkaloids can make inflammation worse or be poisonous.
The takeaway. For most people, theres no need to avoid nightshades, as studies havent linked them to negative health consequences. These foods are incredibly healthy and offer more health benefits than costs, Lachman says. However, just like any food, it is possible to be intolerant to them.
