Shading words or paragraphs gives them a background color that updates when you switch to a different document theme. Its different from highlighting text, which has a very limited choice of colors, and doesnt update when you switch to another theme. Select the word or paragraph that you want to apply shading to.
Word 2008/2011/2016: From the Word menu (beside Apple icon on the top-left), choose Preferences and click View to change the Field shading that is listed under Showor Show in Document.
To change the shaded background of fields in Microsoft Word, do the following: Click the File tab. Click Options. Click Advanced. Under Show document content, in the Field shading list, do one of the following: To make fields stand out from the rest of the document content, select Always.
Why did my Word document background turn gray? Your Word document might be gray because it is in Reading Layout View, Text Boundaries or Page Margins are enabled, or the Page Color has been set to gray.
Reading Layout View: In some instances, Word automatically changes the document to Reading Layout View, which results in a gray background to improve reading comprehension and reduce eye strain.
Just follow these steps: Click and drag your cursor to select the highlighted text. Go to the Home tab at the top of the screen. Look for the Font group and click the arrow next to the Text Highlight Color button. Pick the No Color option in the drop-down menu. The gray highlight will be gone!
