If your primary concern is legibility, we recommend making a scan or high-contrast photocopy on a dark setting. If you do not have a photocopier or scanner, try taking a photo of the document and changing the contrast settings. Often this technique will help your eye distinguish text and lines more easily.
Receipt papers slightly differ from normal paper used to write on or in printing. Receipt rolls are a special type of thermal paper widely used in various industries. Most people dont understand how printing a receipt paper roll occurs with no ink. Thermal papers use heat to create text or images on the paper rolls.
Get your hairdryer and set it on medium, and blow hot air directly towards the receipt until the text becomes visible. You can also heat the receipt using a light bulb if you dont own a hairdryer. Regardless of the heat source, never try to apply heat on the front, as this will cause the whole thing to turn black.
Hold your receipt about an arms length away from a blow dryer. Start on the lowest heat setting, just in case, and point it at the receipt. The dry heat should cause the ink image to slowly reappear. You can use a scanner to upload a receipt and manipulate the image settings like you would for a photo.
Apply heat to it. If youre no Photoshop genius, you can try restoring it the old-fashioned way: by gently applying heat to the thermal paper. Get your hairdryer and set it on medium, and blow hot air directly towards the receipt until the text becomes visible.
They dont use ink at all: they use thermal printers. Such printouts fade because the additional application of heat and/or UV radiation degrades the print-out.
Dont Store in Sunlight Ultraviolet light from sunlight makes receipts fade incredibly fast. In fact, the ideal space for thermal paper storage is a cool, dark place with controlled humidity.
Thermal documents should be stored in a dark place at a relative humidity between 45% and 65% and a room temperature below 77F (25C). If these conditions are met and the recommended equipment is used to create the thermal documents, the images should remain legible for at least five to seven years.
