Youll want to fill out each line of your money order with a pen in large and legible letters. As with personal checks, the first line on a money order will be the Payee field. Its important that you fill out your recipients name accurately here.
Financial paperwork (e.g., credit card applications) and some other types of legal documents (such as those requiring a signature) usually require using a blue ink pen. If you were to use any other kind of ink, especially black, it would be difficult to determine whether the documents are original or photocopied.
On the money order form, write the name of the person you want to pay. As soon as youve paid for your money order, fill out the name of the person or company you want to pay in the PAY TO THE ORDER OF box. You should use black or dark blue ink.
Its best to use blue or black ink for signatures. Avoid colors like red, purple, and green.
Purple ink is reserved for the endorsement of the depository bank (bank of first deposit). A sample of the front and back of a check is shown in the 8034.2 Illustration.
Does it matter what color ink I use to fill out a money order? It depends. Not as far as the bank is concerned, but sometimes government agencies insist that all forms be filled in black, including payments.
You must also remember to use either a pen with either black or blue ink to write on your money order. You may not use a pencil, as this could pose a serious risk to you. Anyone with an eraser could re-write the information on your money order and steal your funds, so you be sure to always use a pen.
