You can also play with the length of the line. You can make them longer shorter.
The first of these is line shading or hatching - this is placing straight lines parallel to one another to create shading. The closer they are to one another, the darker it looks. Cross hatching is using those same lines but adding angled lines across them. Again, the closer they are, the darker the shading.
The 4 shading techniques are blending, hatching, stippling, scumbling. There are also subcategories of each, including cross-hatching, contour hatching, pointillism. Each shading technique can be used in a variety of ways and they can be mixed with each other creatively.
Another way to add shadow effects to our illustrations using ink is to add small dots and lines; however, this time they wont overlap each other. Depending on the distance between the points and lines, we can create a gradient effect or make the shadows appear more or less intense.
Fountain pen shading inks give your handwriting an authentic depth of color that looks astounding. Instead of laying down a uniform saturation of color in every mark, a shading ink, pen, paper combination will display variations of light to dark within the letters on the page, known as fountain pen ink shading.
Keep the lines spaced closer together to make darker shadows or place them further apart to make that part of the drawing look brighter. Try to pull hatching lines in one long stroke to keep them uniform. Follow the contours of objects with your lines to help simulate a three-dimensional form.
