Sheen in an ink is an appearance that the ink shines with a different color, that appears metallic or shiny. Sheen is different than shimmer, which is when metallic particles are added to the ink.

To get a smooth shade, you'll want thick strokes which are close together. Move your hand high up on the pencil and away from the tip. The more you angle the side of your lead towards the paper, the thicker your strokes will be. The thicker, the better!

1:38 12:47 Brian Goulet's Top 7 Shading Fountain Pen Inks - YouTube YouTube Start of suggested clip End of suggested clip It's just the line you put down is just flat and very kind of consistent looking with fountain pensMoreIt's just the line you put down is just flat and very kind of consistent looking with fountain pens though you have this characteristic called shading. Which has to do with a variation.
More so than with other inks, there is a particular technique for filling your fountain pen with shimmering inks. The sparkle additives will settle, so you need to gently shake the bottle of ink before filling it. Make sure to shake it slowly so that no air bubbles form because this can cause flow issues!
What is shading? It's a common (and often desired) aspect of fountain pen ink where there is pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word.
Some factors that effect sheen are the type of paper, the ink, and the nib size. Less absorbent papers, like Tomoe River Paper, are best to produce sheen from inks. Also, broader nibs that lay more ink onto the page help produce more sheen.
Shading is where the ink pools in different spots during use, creating lighter spots and darker spots. I base my opinion of an ink's shading based on how much it shows up when using five different nib sizes: extra fine, fine, medium, broad, and flex.
