The five elements of shading are full light, halftone, shadow edge, reflected light, and cast shadow. Some of these five shading elements are on the object itself while others, like the cast shadow, are found on the surface the object is sitting on.
Parallel lines A different way to create shadows with ink is by drawing parallel lines that follow the shape of the object that were inking. In other words, if were adding shadows to a cylindrical object, the parallel lines will be curved, adhering to its shape.
Shading is where the ink pools in different spots during use, creating lighter spots and darker spots. I base my opinion of an inks shading based on how much it shows up when using five different nib sizes: extra fine, fine, medium, broad, and flex.

Having two or three pens with different nib sizes can make such a difference when shading. On my practice page Ive broken down the different types of shading I most often use. The first of these is line shading or hatching - this is placing straight lines parallel to one another to create shading.
The 4B is a good choice for darker shading. Its soft enough to give a good layer of graphite quickly without going blunt too fast. The 6B pencil is good for very dark areas, but its very soft and blunts quickly, so its difficult to use for detail and tends to look grainy, skimming over the surface of the paper.
