Shading occurs when ink spreads across paper in different thicknesses. In other words, when there is more ink on one part of the paper than another. Take a look at this example: Fountain Pen Ink Shading notice how the same ink looks dark and light. You can see that some letters are much darker than others.
What is shading? Its a common (and often desired) aspect of fountain pen ink where there is pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word.
While sheen is a chemical property of ink that is related to the dyes, shimmer is pigment that has been added to the ink basically glitter. This shimmer makes inks sparkle once they dry on paper. While sheen requires specific pens and paper to appear, shimmer will appear regardless of which pen or paper is used.

The first is a pen with a nib that puts down a lot of ink. The more ink, the more sheen. An ink with a lot of sheen might not show the sheen with an extra fine or fine nib, but anything medium or larger will work. The second thing you need to promote sheen is to have a paper that resistants ink.

Which has to do with a variation.

Sheen in an ink is an appearance that the ink shines with a different color, that appears metallic or shiny. Sheen is different than shimmer, which is when metallic particles are added to the ink.
Shading is where the ink pools in different spots during use, creating lighter spots and darker spots. I base my opinion of an inks shading based on how much it shows up when using five different nib sizes: extra fine, fine, medium, broad, and flex.
The 4B is a good choice for darker shading. Its soft enough to give a good layer of graphite quickly without going blunt too fast. The 6B pencil is good for very dark areas, but its very soft and blunts quickly, so its difficult to use for detail and tends to look grainy, skimming over the surface of the paper.
