Baseline TIFF image types are: bilevel, grayscale, palette-color, and RGB full-color images.
What is a TIFF file? A TIFF, which stands for Tag Image File Format, is a computer file used to store raster graphics and image information. A favorite among photographers, TIFFs are a handy way to store high-quality images before editing if you want to avoid lossy file formats.
A TIFF file supports grayscale as well as RBG,CMYK, and LAB colour space. The format allows a colour depth of up to 16 bits per colour channel and is therefore ideal for data exchange during a RAW conversion.
Unlike JPEG, TIFF files can have a bit depth of either 16-bits per channel or 8-bits per channel, and multiple layered images can be stored in a single TIFF file.
Disadvantages of TIFF files. Detail and resolution lead to TIFFs being quite large files. Their size makes them difficult to share or send to contacts or clients. Their high quality makes them a poor choice for website design, since detailed images can slow a websites loading speed.
One of the easiest ways to know if you are working with an 8-bit image is to check the images file format. If the image is a JPEG (with the extension . jpg), it will always be an 8-bit image. One of the advantages of working with 8-bit images is they are typically smaller in file size.
Are PNG or TIFF files better for photos? TIFF files are better for print photography while PNGs work best for screens. Neither option, however, is ideal for web use due to their large file size.
If youre printing something smaller-scale -- think a small photo album or scrapbooking material -- JPEG will do just fine. If youre printing something large, however, where quality is important -- like an art piece or giclee art-- you should go with the TIFF format.
