Use small, side-to-side movements with your pencil to shade your shape and go back over the areas which you would like to be darker. Vary the length of your pencil strokes so that they dont look too uniform and make sure that your lines are following the same direction to ensure that your shading looks even.
The terminator, or bedbug line, is the area where the form transitions from light into shadow. It occurs where the light rays from the source are tangent to the edge of the form. If its a soft, indirect light, the transition from light to shadow at the terminator will be more gradual.
Shading is the process of adding value to create the illusion of form, space, and most importantly - light in a drawing. When executed correctly, shading can make a drawing appear three dimensional and create a convincing image.
Shading is the darkening or colouring of a drawing with lines or blocks of colour, and is often used to create the illusion of depth or make an object three-dimensional.
The basic principle followed in shading is keeping the surface in shade so that direct sunlight does not fall on it, thus avoiding radiant heat and increased temperatures. Shading the structure from midday summer sun is easy as it is at a higher angle in summer than in winter.
Mark the direction of the light source on your paper. Draw an arrow or a small sun where the light source appears in your drawing. The side of the object closest to the light source will be brighter and have highlights, while the furthest side will have darker shadows.
Scribbling. The easiest way to create shading is to just build up darker tones with random motions until you get the desired look. This can also be the quickest way to get shading done, due to its loose and quick motion. Be careful with losing too much control.
