hi everybody welcome to video number 38 in the past videos weve been working on some digital typography from Mount Shasta most recently we re projected that data so its now in a UTM coordinate system so now I want to start visualizing the data of Mount Shasta and the best way to do this is by making a hill shade image so in this video Im going to talk briefly about what a hill shade is and then show you how to make one in arcmap so a hill shade or shaded relief image is a visualization of the digital elevation data and the way this is generated is that the computer simulates shining a light on the digital topography and so in this case if the light is shining from 315 degrees or out of the Northwest you can see that the computer has simulated brighter better illuminated areas versus shadowed areas in this image theres a pretty flat surface with a road going across it and then weve got the edge of a plateau here with some of these rivers that are dissecting headward and have creat
