To create your own header or footer from scratch, double-click the margin at the top or bottom of your document. This will unlock the header or footer area, so you can add whatever information you want. You can also use the tools on the Design tab, which will appear on the right side of the Ribbon. Headers and footers are only visible in Print Layout view and Print Preview. To indicate when the headers and footers are not active, the information contained within them appears greyed out or faded.
If the header is too close to the top margin, it may appear faded. To correct this, pick Margins from the Page Layout menu. Adjust the top margin to give your header additional space.
Otherwise, you can turn off the field shading via FileOptionsAdvancedShow document content and set the field shading to Never to turn it off completely or to When selected to show the shading when the selection is in a field.
1) Make sure that you are in Print Layout view - the header and footer arent visible in any of the other views. 2) Move the mouse pointer to the top of a page. The mouse pointer should change to a double box with up- and down-pointing arrows. Double-click to show the white space at the top and bottom of the page.
Headers and footers are shaded because they are not in the typing area of the document. When you double-click inside the header or footer, the text will show as normal and the body of the document will be faded. In Word, the header is faded when you are not actively editing it.
It is also possible to add a link inside the document header (or footer) by using the -oxy-link property on the @page margin box declaration. The entire page margin box will behave as a link and will be clickable.
