Hi everyone. Its Andy LaCivita, founder of milewalk and the milewalk Academy and award-winning author of The Hiring Prophecies. Here with this weeks two-minute tip, were going to talk about cover letters. When I say cover letters, I dont actually mean cover letters. I mean, could be a cover letter, any which way youre going to introduce yourself to an employer, whether thats through a cover letter or an email introduction with your resume attached or through an applicant tracking system. Some employers like you to put some notations in there about yourself and whyre qualified for the position. Whatever means youre going to introduce yourself to the employer, you need to do three things and you can do it in four sentences. Ultimately, what you want to accomplish is you want to let them know what it is youre inquiring about. Second thing you want to do is you want to let them know who you are and why youre qualified. The third thing is you want to show them you have a positive

Email cover letters can generally be sent in one of two ways: as an email attachment or as the body of your email. Before sending your cover letter, check the companys job application guidelines. Some companies prefer attachments, while others prefer them to be in the body of your email message.
DO: Include position title in the SUBJECT line of e-mail. Align all text to the left. Use spaces to separate paragraphs. Use 12 point Times New Roman font. Test letter before sending it to employers by mailing it to yourself or to a friend. Mail a copy to your top employers.
Use action verbs and the active voice; convey confidence, optimism, and enthusiasm coupled with respect and professionalism. Show some personality, but avoid hard-sell, gimmicky, or unorthodox letters. Start fast; attract interest immediately. For more information see Business Letter Format.
Use a font style that is simple, clear and commonplace, such as Times New Roman, Arial or Calibri. Font SIZES from 10-12 points are generally in the ballpark of looking appropriate. Keep in mind that different font styles in the same point size are not the same size!
Ideally, stick to more neutral colors beige, blue, or grey for example. Going with more bold colors can be okay for some more creative industries, but overall you should decide based on the company youre applying at. To learn more about designing a good application, check our guide on cover letter design.
A cover letter format is similar to a one-page business letter format. It should have one-inch margins on all sides, size 1012 font in Times New Roman or Calibri, and 1.15 line spacing. Once the formatting is squared away, your job is to make sure your cover letter is concise, relevant, and easy to read.
Recommended serif fonts include Cambria, Georgia, and Times New Roman. Sans serif fonts dont have small strokes attached to their letters, giving them a cleaner and more modern style. Some recommended sans serif fonts include Arial, Calibri, and Verdana.
In print, the optimal point size for body text is 1012 point. On the web, the optimal size is 1525 pixels. Though 12 point has become the default size in digital word processingand also the basis of many institutional document-formatting rulesthats mostly due to the typewriter tradition.
