The Science Some can survive in deep shade by using infra-red and other low-energy light to photosynthesize. They accomplish this by re-equipping their photosynthetic protein complexes with different kinds of chlorophyll that absorb lower-energy light.
(Explanation: seeds store a lot of chemical energy in the form of fats and proteins that can be used to grow in the dark. Once this stored chemical energy is exhausted, the plant requires light to grow taller.)
Shade, not only influences the amount of light received by plants but also changes other small environmental conditions, such as air and ground temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and so on, which are important for plant growth [14].
Shade leaves also have more chlorophyll because of the chloroplasts. Not only do plants that get more shade have bigger leaves, they are richer in color. Chlorophyll is the element that gives plants enough energy for photosynthesis as well as giving the leaves a bright green color.
The rate at which a plant carries out photosynthesis depends in part on its environment. Plants that grow in shade, for example, carry out photosynthesis at low levels of light. Plants that grow in the sun, such as desert plants, typically carry out photosynthesis at much higher levels of light.
Stunted or Slow Growth Plants need nutrients to grow. But as you now know, light influences photosynthesis, which gives food to plants. That means that plants need light to grow and survive. As such, a plant grown in complete darkness will not produce enough energy or food.
Plants grown in the shade have lower maximum photosynthetic rates than those grown in full sun (4), but are often more efficient at low PAR levels. Barden (2) found that for apple, net photosynthesis, dark respiration, and specific leaf weight (SLW) were lower for leaves grown in the shade than those grown in the sun.
Thus, climate and soils should play important roles in regulating Chl, especially at a large scale. Chlorophyll synthesis requires many elements [i.e., nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P)] from soils; thus, soils should influence Chl (Fredeen et al., 1990).
Leaves which grow in the shade (shade leaves) are generally larger in area but thinner than leaves which grow in full sunlight (sun leaves). Sun leaves become thicker than shade leaves because they have a thicker cuticle and longer palisade cells, and sometimes several layers of palisade cells.
As you rise from low light intensity to higher light intensity, the rate of photosynthesis will increase because there is more light available to drive the reactions of photosynthesis.
