Its the one weve all been waiting for!! SHADING! Stan Prokopenko here, youre watching proko. Form First lets talk about form, because form is what we are trying to indicate when we shade. In order to effectively shade form, you first need to understand the form youre shading. In the structure video I talked about the basic building blocks of form - spheres, cylinders and boxes. Organic forms found in nature, like humans, animals and trees could and should be constructed from these simple forms to capture the character of the subject. The primary form, such as a cylinder for an arm, should be dominant over any secondary forms, such as the bicep, tricep, deltoid, forearms muscles. And these secondary forms should be dominant over tertiary forms, like a vein or wrinkles. You dont necessarily have to draw them in that sequence, just make sure that your shading primarily reveals the largest forms, and the smaller forms act as details - icing on the cake. Guide to Shading Techniques: Hatching, Cross-Hatching, Scribbling and Others.
Shading is the process of adding value to create the illusion of form, space, and most importantly - light in a drawing. When executed correctly, shading can make a drawing appear three dimensional and create a convincing image. When rendering a drawing that communicates volume, shading is absolutely critical.
The 4 shading techniques are blending, hatching, stippling, scumbling. There are also subcategories of each, including cross-hatching, contour hatching, pointillism. Each shading technique can be used in a variety of ways and they can be mixed with each other creatively.
2.1 Technique 1: Hatching Technique. 2.2 Technique 2: Cross Hatching. 2.3 Technique 3: Scribble Technique. 2.4 Technique 4: Smooth Shading. 2.5 Technique 5: Circular Shading. 2.6 Technique 6: Stippling.
The depiction of light and shadow is an important technique to represent illusory space in painting. Without light, nothing can be seen but with shadow and shade objects and the space surrounding them can be realistically defined.
Purpose of Shades and Shadows. The purpose of indi cating shades and shadows on a drawing is to give to the objects represented an effect of soliditya realistic quality that they would not have in a plain projection drawing, on which the shades and shadows are not shown. This effect may be seen by comparing Figs.
Cast shadow: The silhouette that our object projects on the surface where it is standing. Its shape can grow or shrink depending on the angle of the light.
For one thing, they show where an object is in space. When an object and its cast shadow touch, then they both rest upon the same surface. Establishing such surfaces in a painting keeps objects from seeming to float. Cast shadows also tell the viewer about the brightness and nearness of the light source.
Gradient shading is a common web design technique. It is used to show depth on an otherwise flat looking web page. Gradient shading can be used to improve the usability of interactive page elements such as buttons. In contemporary web design, can be used to achieve attractive gradient shading on web pages and elements.
Choosing a Shading Method Start with hatching for a basic shading technique. Hatching is making a series of parallel lines to simulate shadows in your drawing. Use cross-hatching to shade quickly. Work with stippling for a stylized look. Use blending for a smooth appearance.
