[Music] hello everyone today I am going to be talking to you about the basics of shading so before I can show you what shading is you need to know what tone is so tone refers to how light or dark something is and when we use pencil were you shading to help us show that on our drawing so with shading we can add the light and dark areas to our drawing in pencil and that helps the object to look 3d so it has its tone so tips that I can give you when your shading is you need to get take your time to get it right and its probably best to start with a sharp pencil what we usually do when we start to learn about shading is to start with a tonal scale so a tonal scale usually goes from dark to light or light to dark and it helps you see how many tones you can get your pencil to do I like to start with the darkest tone first because I find that easier and then that way your pencil get slightly blunter ready for you to do the lighter tones so the important thing when youre shading is to keep
