Its the one weve all been waiting for!! SHADING! Stan Prokopenko here, youre watching proko. Form First lets talk about form, because form is what we are trying to indicate when we shade. In order to effectively shade form, you first need to understand the form youre shading. In the structure video I talked about the basic building blocks of form - spheres, cylinders and boxes. Organic forms found in nature, like humans, animals and trees could and should be constructed from these simple forms to capture the character of the subject. The primary form, such as a cylinder for an arm, should be dominant over any secondary forms, such as the bicep, tricep, deltoid, forearms muscles. And these secondary forms should be dominant over tertiary forms, like a vein or wrinkles. You dont necessarily have to draw them in that sequence, just make sure that your shading primarily reveals the largest forms, and the smaller forms act as details - icing on the cake. Sarah Evans. Shading is the darkening or colouring of a drawing with lines or blocks of colour, and is often used to create the illusion of depth or make an object three-dimensional.
The side that the light hits directly is called the light most facing plane. The side that the light doesn't hit directly is called the shadow side. Not every part of the light most facing plane has the same amount of light hitting it. To describe how that light changes we need to bring in half tones.
Shading is used traditionally in drawing for depicting a range of darkness by applying media more densely or with a darker shade for darker areas, and less densely or with a lighter shade for lighter areas. Light patterns, such as objects having light and shaded areas, help when creating the illusion of depth on paper.
And, like when you are drawing a sphere, every aspect of the face contains the five elements of shading: Cast shadow, shadow edge, halftone, reflected light and full light.
Shading is the process of adding value to create the illusion of form, space, and most importantly - light in a drawing. When executed correctly, shading can make a drawing appear three dimensional and create a convincing image.
When shading, look at the larger light and shadow shapes first, and draw those in. Then address the smaller shapes and details with the larger areas. By starting with the overall idea, you're halfway home in depicting volume.
Shade is a hue or mixture of pure colors to which only black is added. It contains no white or gray. Shade darkens the color, but the hue remains the same. When mixing a shade, begin with the color itself then add black one drop at a time.
