We use shading to transform a basic shape like this circle here into a sphere. So we turn a shape into a form that has depth and volume. So we have to pay attention to where the light is coming from to help us shades our objects. In this drawing, the light is coming from this direction and so the lightest part is going to be here and the darkest part is going to be on the other side. So when the hits an object, what it does it kind of divides the object into a light area and the darker area. So the light side would include the really light part which is this, which is the highlight, and then a slightly less bright part or a bit darker part, which is called the halftone or the mid-tone area.
