when an object is lit by a direct light you get a predictable pattern of light and Shadow first determine the angle of your light source imagine the planes that make up your form at the division of the light and dark side you have the core Shadow this wont be a thin and even line down the form it changes and can soften with the shape of the form is the plane change round sharp or somewhere in between next fill in the shadow side with a clean dark value this will be lighter than the core Shadow because of the reflected light from the environment now identify the point of the center light where the plane directly faces the light half tones appear as a gradation between the center light and the core Shadow next you have a highlight the center light is the plane change that faces the light while the Highlight is the plane that reflects the light to you the viewer when an object blocks the light from another object it casts a shadow that wraps around the form

And it leaves untidy lines.
The Original Blackwing 602: Favourite of artists and writers John Steinbeck, Quincy Jones, Sondheim Bernstein, Nabokov, animator Shamus Culhane (of Disneys Snow White), and cartoonist Chuck Jones all famously favoured these pencils.
Ideal for writing, the 602 has a firm lead thats a little smoother and darker than that of a typical writing pencil. Its a versatile pencil whose lead is similar to a B or HB. The hardest Blackwing pencil is the Natural, with extra-firm lead.
Shading is the process of adding value to create the illusion of form, space, and most importantly - light in a drawing. When executed correctly, shading can make a drawing appear three dimensional and create a convincing image. When rendering a drawing that communicates volume, shading is absolutely critical.
While the softer B pencils are generally considered the best for shading, theres no reason to discount the harder H pencils. The HB and H are good choices for fine, light, even shading. However, they too have drawbacks. Pencil grades from HB through H, 2H to 5H get progressively harder and are easier to keep sharp.
For simple sketching, the HB pencil is probably the most popular, with artists also favoring the H and the B pencils. For preliminary sketches that will be used as a guide for a painting or illustration, the lighter 2H4H pencils are ideal.
Blackwing Pearl has slightly harder graphite at maybe 2B. Blackwing 602 has the hardest of the three, which is actually also quite similar to 2B.
And, like when you are drawing a sphere, every aspect of the face contains the five elements of shading: Cast shadow, shadow edge, halftone, reflected light and full light.
6B Great for adding in substantially darker tones/shading that will make your drawings and sketches come to life as a contrast to the lighter shades and white paper. This pencil has an excellent shading capability and creates some lovely rich dark grey tones.
