you hey everyone Steve from backcountry gallery here this time I want to share the real reason to shoot RAW images instead of JPEG but first letamp;#39;s briefly talk about exactly what a raw file is basically a raw file is your unprocessed or minimally processed data from the image sensor in your camera this data in and of itself canamp;#39;t be directly edited with a normal bitmap editor it has to be converted to a usable format first this is where our RAW processing software like Lightroom for instance comes in now the advantage is that because the data is unprocessed it allows for a much higher degree of post-processing flexibility and image interpretation then maybe an image thatamp;#39;s pre processed by the camera like a JPEG for instance however raw may not seem all that necessary at least not at first the thing is when people are first trying to decide between raw and JPEG theyamp;#39;ll often set their camera to capture both at once and then compare the results wh

Many professional photographers shoot in RAW because the format captures the highest level of detail. It can often be easier to edit exposure later with a RAW file. However, shooting in JPEG has its benefits, since their smaller file sizes allow you to shoot more images at once and transfer files faster.
Depth: RAW files typically have higher color depth compared to JPEG, capturing a broader range of colors and tones. Editing Capability: The increased color depth allows for more nuanced adjustments when editing images in post-production.
Shooting RAW If youre shooting in jpeg only, or JPEG + RAW, your camera will give you a choice of color space for the JPEGs. Id recommend using docHubRGB there. But again, if youre shooting RAW only, then you dont need to worry about any of the color space settings in your camera, they wont have any effect.
White balance. With JPEG files, the white balance is already balanced. This is a big reason why JPEGs look more finished than their RAW counterparts straight off the camera.
RAW files have 68 billion colors between black and white; JPEG files can have no more than 16 million colors. Having the extra tones can increase editing flexibility, especially when trying to preserve details in shadows and highlights or pulling out more detail in other areas of the image.
Raw files are extremely useful to photographers after a wedding day or portrait session. Its because of their unprocessed nature that we mentioned before that makes it actually possible to edit your photos.
Capturing and storing all the details that pass through your cameras sensors means RAW files contain a wider dynamic range and far greater color spectrum than JPEGs. If a RAW image is under or overexposed, the wider dynamic range makes recovery a lot easier, with greater control over sharpening.
Higher image quality translates into more available data when it comes to photo editing, giving RAWs a definitive edge over JPEGs. Editing programs like docHub Camera RAW, Bridge, or Lightroom are built for fine-tuning RAWs into polished final photos.
