Roof overhangs, pergolas and verandahs which incorporate vertical structures, such as screens, lattice and vertical awnings are also a good method to block the sun from east and west-facing walls and windows (Figure 12). This type of screening can also include blinds, vegetation or trellising.
Shading simply means blocking the direct rays of the sun. For your home, shading can be provided by fixed or adjustable building elements such as eaves, awnings, fences, external blinds and trellises, or by natural elements such as trees and shrubs. Your home may also be shaded by nearby buildings and other features.
Shade Structure means a structure with a temporary or permanent roof or a covering made of or supporting plants or vines which is designed to provide shelter from the heat or glare of the sunlight.
A system that can be added to a fenestration system which blocks or redirects some amount of the solar radiation coming through the fenestration system. A shading system can be located on the inside or outside of a fenestration system, and it can also be added between the glass (or plastic) layers of a glazing system.
Sun shading devices ensure a greater level of comfort for those inside the building as they block sunlight and reduce the amount of solar gain. This ultimately makes the indoor environment better for occupants as it balances the temperature, humidity and the intensity of light.
Shade structures protect people and equipment from harmful sun rays and help keep outdoor surfaces shaded and cool. Adding shade structures to an outdoor area creates shelter from the sun so your community, guests, employees, students or others can enjoy the shade when outside.
The most common form of shade is an exterior fixed horizontal overhang. These are used on the side of the building facing the suns path, sometimes including east and west faces. However, east and west faces often have more need of vertical fins to avoid low-angled sun.
The first step for creating a wonderful shade is to determine which area you need protected, and how much overall shade you will require. Its a good idea to start off with a simple 4 corner Hypar shape (shown below) as the initial concept design, and then experiment from there.
