The width of the lampshade (diameter at the bottom) should be roughly equal to the height of the lamp base. The height of the lampshade should be about two thirds the height of the lamp base. The lampshade should be the wider than the widest part of the lamp base.
The shade should be twice as wide as the lamp base, and one third of the total height of the lamp. So for a 6-inch lamp base, the shade should be at least 12 inches wide. And if the total height of the lamp (including the bulb and harp) is 24 inches, the shade should be 8 inches tall.
The more light you need, the more transparent the material and larger the shade. The higher the wattage, the larger the shade.
The three most commonly used types of fitters are a spider, an uno and a screw-on fitter, and its essential that you choose a shade with the fitter that corresponds with your lamp base otherwise you wont be able to attach the two.
Round lamp shades direct most of the lamps light out through the top and bottom of the shade providing focused and ambient light. Round shapes include oval lamp shades, cone lamp shades and drum lamp shades. These shade shapes are ideal for placement over a table or on a tall floor lamp.
In general, a shades shape should follow the contour of a lamp. This is not a hard and fast rule, but it holds true in most cases. So, for example, if the base has curves, go with a curved shade shape. If a base is straight, choose a shade with straight edges, even if theyre angled.
White shades are best at lighting an entire room, while darker ones tend to funnel the light and make a more dramatic statement. When it comes to fabric, follow the generally accepted truths that silk is more formal than linen, textured materials or parchment shades.
There are three golden rules to remember when it comes to choosing a lampshade for table lamps: The width of the lampshade should be equal to the height of the lamp base. The height of the lampshade should be two thirds of the height of the lamp base. The lampshade should be wider than the widest part of the lamp base.
Types of Lamp Shade Fitters There are the three common fitters: Spider, Clip-On, and Uno. The spider lamp shade is the most common type of fitter for table and floor lamp shades. Spider fitters sit atop the lamps harp (the U-shaped metal part of a lamp that fits around and protects the light bulb).
In general, a shades shape should follow the contour of a lamp. This is not a hard and fast rule, but it holds true in most cases. So, for example, if the base has curves, go with a curved shade shape. If a base is straight, choose a shade with straight edges, even if theyre angled.
