You can change the settings for highlighting Fields/Reference Marks in your word processor: Word for Windows: In Word Options, open Advanced, then set Field shading to Never, Always, or When selected. Word for Mac: Open Word Preferences View and set Field shading to Never, Always, or When selected.
When inserting a cross reference (insert - Cross Reference - Heading - Heading (no context) - ok), the field shows the specific heading number, but 2 spaces are inserted after the field. I can permanently remove the spaces by right-clicking the field - edit field - click on Suppress all non-delimiter chars.
Insert a Cross-reference Click where you want to add a reference. Click the Insert tab. Expand the Links group, if necessary. Click the Cross-reference button. Select what you want the cross-reference to point to. Click the Insert reference to list arrow and select how you want the reference to be displayed.
Shading in Fill-in fields Go to Developer|ControlsLegacy Tools and click on Form Field Shading; Go to File|Options|AdvancedShow Document ContentField Shading and choose your preferred shading option; Select a shaded field then go to Home|Paragraph|Shading and choose your preferred shading option.
Cross References are Fields and there are 3 settings in File Options Advanced Show document content Field shading. You can set that control to Always and all Fields in the document will automatically be shaded.
Press Shift+P for a tick or Shift+O for a cross. If you prefer them to be in boxes, press Shift+R or Shift+Q.
Click Format. Select Font. Select Bold in the middle panel at the top of the Font dialog box. If your cursor was in the Replace field, then immediately below that field Font: Bold displays.
Search the Symbols Menu Go to the Insert tab, click on Symbol on the far right, click More Symbols, and change the font to Wingdings in the box that pops up. Then, scroll down to the bottom and choose the tick or cross symbol that you prefer.
