Jeyan: THIS MONTH MORE THAN A DOZEN FIRST NATIONS IN ONTARIO WILL VOTE TO RATIFY WHATS CALLED THE ANISHINABEK NATION GOVERNANCE AGREEMENT. IT TRANSFERS JURISDICTION IN FOUR KEY AREAS TO THE ANISHINABEK NATION. OUR NORTHEASTERN ONTARIO HUBS JOURNALIST NICK DUNNE HAS BEEN LOOKING INTO HOW MUCH SUPPORT THE MOVE HAS, AND HE JOINS US FROM OUR STUDIO AT LAURENTIAN UNIVERSITY IN SUDBURY FOR MORE. WELCOME TO THE SHOW. Nick Dunne: THANKS, JEYAN. Jeyan: SO, NICK, LETS START WITH WHATS THE STATUS QUO NOW FOR FIRST NATIONS IN ONTARIO? YEAH, SURE. AND THIS APPLIES TO FIRST NATIONS FOR THE MOST PART ACROSS THE COUNTRY. SO THE GOVERNING LEGISLATURE IS THE INDIAN ACT WHICH WAS IMPLEMENTED IN 1876. THIS EFFECTIVELY DEFINES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE IN CANADA AND THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA. SO THIS IS WHAT CREATED THE RESERVE SYSTEM, ITS WHAT CREATED THE BAND COUNCIL SYSTEM, BUT ITS ALSO WHAT CREATED THE RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS AND A WHOLE LITANY OF DISCRIMINATORY POLICIE

The proposed Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement is a self-government agreement with the Government of Canada that will recognize the Anishinabek First Nations law-making powers and authority on how they will govern themselves, thus removing them from the governance provisions of the Indian Act.
The crane clan people were responsible for external subjects and issues concerning the community, and the loon clan people were responsible for internal matters. Also, the Anishinabe leaders were chosen based on their character, skills, and courage.
The James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement is the basic Charter of Cree Rights. It is the first modern Indigenous land claim agreement and treaty in Canada, and it is protected by the Constitution of Canada. Cree treaty rights set out in the Agreement cannot be changed or abolished without Cree consent.
