The proper term is stumpf shade which in German means edge removed or blunt. Weve shortened it to stump shade which isnt a flattering description of our prep and can cause patients eyes to open wide. I think dentin shade can be confused with our layering material shades in both ceramic and porcelain.
BL1 will be considered as the super white while a BL4 will resemble four shades darker than BL1. In choosing the right color, many cosmetic dentists would recommend choosing one that is not more than two shades lighter than the whiteness of your existing teeth.
However, the B1 tooth shade is actually the lightest, followed by A1. This is by virtue of its coloring (reddish yellow) as opposed to the coloring of A teeth (reddish brown). In order, the whitest shades of natural teeth are: B1.
The O indicates occlusal, which is the uppermost or bite surface of a molar or premolar. The I refers to incisal, which is bite edge of the front teeth (incisors and canines). Another frequently used code is B, which refers to the buccal or surface of the tooth facing the cheek.
Tips for shade matching (shade taking) chair side: Always start a shade selection at the beginning of the appointment to avoid the teeth being dehydrated. Use natural daylight when possible. Keep patient eye level. Turn shade tabs so that the incisal area is facing upright and place edge to edge to the tooth selected.
A frequently used reference tool, a shade guide shows teeth in basic shades ranging from the lightest to darkest natural colors. Various shade guides exist for dental offices, but a common guide has four basic shade ranges to determine what shade your teeth are: A (reddish-brown) B (reddish-yellow) C (gray)
Using a four-shade guide, most people have teeth that are A3 in color, meaning that they are somewhat reddish brown. This is considered the average, natural tooth shade. Nowadays, however, many people want their teeth to look whiter and brighter and are requesting that their A3 teeth improve in color.
Classical shade guide (A1 D4) serves to accurately determine tooth shade. Arrangement of the shades in the VITA classical family of shades is as follows: A1 - A4 (reddish-brownish), B1 - B4 (reddish-yellowish), C1 - C4 (greyish shades), D2 - D4 (reddish-grey).
